Own Kidnapping (news review)

Chizoba Ogbonna, a 36 years old single mother of three, and a teacher, has been arrested by the operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, in Abriba-Ohafia area of Abia State for allegedly masterminding her own kidnapping which saw her family pay to her and her accomplices the sum of N500,000 out of N2 million ransom.

Arrested alongside with her were her accomplices, Uche Anthony and Joseph Ezema, who'd contacted her family and had demanded the ransom of two million Naira, threatening to kill her within the hours of her abduction if the ransom was not paid, and then ensuring that the first installment of N300,000 was received through Chizoba's account, and then another installment of N200,000 in cash later on.

Fortunately, Chizoba's family had alerted the IRT after the first installment payment. The operatives'd swiftly swung into clandestine action, planting a tracking device into the second installment. This'd led the operatives to the criminals' hideouts and also resulted to their capture. It was however shocking, when the operatives discovered the supposedly-kidnapped-victim, Chizoba, in a compromising position with one of the culprits, laying credence that she was in a romantic relationship with Joseph Ezema.

However, she'd denied masterminding her own kidnapping, but rather, accused her lover, Ezema of hypnotizing her and then taking it far by putting her up for a ransom to her family. She revealed that she'd met Ezema in 2018 on Facebook and had since then begun a romantic relationship with him, and they had both been discussing how they would travel abroad together in pursuit of better livelihood.

Ezema debunked her accusation of hypnotizing her, but claimed that Chizoba was the mastermind of her own fake kidnapping, that she was the first person who'd contacted her own family about it, also, revealing how she had covered the mouthpiece of her phone with an handkerchief while speaking convincingly with them as one of her kidnappers. He said that he and his friend, Uche, were only playing along, considering the gullibility of her family.
