Incest (News Review)

THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD ONYEKACHI NNABUIFE, WHO HAD BEEN UNDER POLICE CUSTODY FOR HAVING CARNAL KNOWLEDGE OF HIS NINE YEARS OLD STEP-DAUGHTER, had had his bail application rejected by the Magistrate Court, which ordered his continuous prison custody, pending legal advise from the Lagos State Department of Public Prosecution.

Nnabuife faces twelve years jail term if found guilty of the two-count charges leveled against him, of defilement and assault. He was married to the victim's  mother, who had moved in with him with her daughter after their union.

Investigation revealed that the accused had been having vaginal penetration with the child for weeks before his arrest and had always threatened the child each time after the abuse,of great consequences if she ever told her mother. However, the mother had noticed a behavioral change in her daughter and had kept pressing her for an answer. She had also been suspicious of her husband to be the reason for her sudden behavioral change. Eventually, the little girl spilled the beans that her step father had been sexually abusing her in her absence for weeks. After managing to overcome her shock, the mother had gone on to report the matter to the Family Support Unit in Ikotun where the police had got involved, and prompting the arrest of the accused.

During investigation, the police were able to establish a case bordering on statutory rape and assault against Mr. Onyekachi. The court, through Magistrate  Mrs. B. O. had then refused to take the accused's plea until it had got advice from the State Department of Public Prosecution, hence, adjourning the case till September 23, 2019.
